  1. Sinclair Davidson says:

Maybe Canberra could be its own republic?

  2. I attended the launch of ‘mate for a head of state’ at the Museum of Sydney/The Sydney Institute on Wednesday 18th January. The speakers, Gerard Henderson, Kathy Bail and John Bell were professional in rallying for the cause.

On some points of detail asked by questioners, the speakers seems a little caught short. This is because the ARM supports a plebicite where the people choose the republic.

Preferring a directly-elected, independent but principly ceremonial Head of State, it is likely that a model that replaces the Queen and leaves the Governors as constitutional watchdogs will be preferred. The Honorary President Republican Model is one of several such proposals.

  3. Andrew Leigh says:

David, this must be is a really hard time for the ARM. Everyone has their own vision for what a good Republic would look like, but it’s pretty clear that the only strategy that will now succeed is one that first gets an in-principle agreement to a Republic.

  4. Andrew, I disagree. The no vote was mainly because people didnt trust Canberra or the professional politicians to tamper with the system. Australians are republican, IIRC it was about 70% for it before the professional politicians got involved. They also want to be involved. I don’t think ARM’s mono-issue pursuit of it is the answer.
