Wake Up Jack

Clocky One of the winners of this year’s IgNobel prizes (for research that should not be replicated) is an invention called "Clocky". From the website:

Clocky is an alarm clock in development for people who have trouble getting out of bed. When you hit the snooze button, Clocky will roll off of the nightstand, fall to the floor, and run around the room, searching for a place to hide.

That alarm clock is simply hideous. Kids are bad enough, but even those you don’t have to crawl around on the floor trying to find.

The Economics IgNobels are very boring for academic wonk types. Many other categories are often, if not mostly, for actual published research papers. The only one of this type for economics is Slemrod/Kopczuk “Dying to Save Taxes: Evidence from Estate Tax Returns on the Death Elasticity” (people may defer their deaths if it means saving on the estate tax).

Surely economists can do better than this? Where are our equivalents of “The Effect of Country Music on Suicide” (Medicine) [divorce and suicide is just a bit too serious, I guess], or “An Analysis of the Forces Required to Drag Sheep over Various Surfaces” (Physics), or “On the Comparative Palatability of Some Dry-Season Tadpoles from Costa Rica” (Biology)? Any thoughts on potential nominees? Possibly from the work on speed dating? Or Christmas presents (although this is older)?

Yes, I thought that too. There was a game theory paper on orgasms by a UT Austin PhD student some years ago. I’ll keep an eye out for other candidates….
