Amazing session at the athletics last night. I had gone along thinking that the highlight would be seeing Asafa Powell, the current world record holder, run the men’s 100m. He was powerfully impressive, but well off his world record pace (9.77), clocking just over 10s.
The real highlight was the men’s 5k final, with 79,000 people screaming their lungs out for 12.5 laps. Mottram ran a sensational race – breaking up the Kenyan trio with three laps to go. Augustine Choge sat right on his heels, and then made a textbook move at the 200m mark. You had to admire Mottram’s tactics, but the effortless beauty of Choge’s running style was such that he always looked like he had it in the bag.
