Ideology first, facts second

On the right, Rafe Champion is outraged by the fact that disabled workers have to work for the minimum wage.

On the left, Gummo Trotsky is outraged by Rafe’s outrageous suggestion.

Neither seem to have heard of the Supported Wage System, under which disabled workers may be paid subminimum wages, which are then topped up by the federal government.

Yeah, but you have to be pretty disabled to go on to SWS. And there’s also pride – many more moderately disabled people would be loathe to admit to themselves that they can’t earn their keep.

Andrew, no doubt people have talked about what I’m about to write, but if there is a strong nexus between minimum wages and employment of the lowest paid whereby having no minimum wage (say) would lead to much greater employment (as Rafe Champion may be discussing at catallaxy), then perhaps you could have a topup scheme (eg some negative income tax or benefit of some description) to top really lowly wages to a reasonable level.

This might be seen as the fed. govt subsidising employers. I don’t know.

  3. Sacha says:

Ha – many people seem to have already thought up my scheme! No probs.

  4. Andrew,

Maybe you should read that post of mine again before you adopt a smug posiition of superior knowledge, old son.

  5. Andrew Leigh says:

GT, I just re-read it. I presume you knew all along about the SWS, but it didn’t come through from the post. Still, I’d be interested in your views on it.

  6. Andrew,

By the time I left the CES, a twitter, bisted and cynical burn-out, I’d decided that there had to be a better way to get the disabled into work than bribing employers over a six to eight month period with a wage subsidy. Still do. Hard put to come up with a “what to do” though.
